Well, sometimes. Why? Because the right hand is regarded as the clean hand. One of our favourite cultural tips for India is to try hard (practise beforehand if necessary!) to eat, shake hands, point, and pass things with your right hand. The theory behind this is that the left hand is involved in unclean tasks, like going to the toilet and cleaning your shoes. Don't worry if you don't always remember these cultural differences in India, or are left-handed - just look like you're trying, and smile and apologise if you get it wrong.

By sex, we actually mean kiss, as this is regarded by many Indians as being equivalent to Doing It. Another cultural tip: don't be surprised to see men holding hands - it signifies friendship.

Number 5 of our cultural tips of India - Your food is not everyone's food
If you have the good fortune to eat with locals, try to remember not to let your lips touch food that you share. I.e., don't put your lips to a cup or bottle that's being passed around. You probably weren't planning to, but just in case!

Number 6 of our cultural tips of India - expect to be offered goods
If you've ever been to the Eiffel Tower, you'll have some idea of one of our cultural tips for India already. On a gap year in India, you're likely to be approached by salespeople, selling all manner of souvenirs. The key is not to show any interest if you don't have any. Ignore them, don't look them in the eye and if you have to, tell them firmly you don't want to buy anything.
